Melanin and SPFs

Understanding Melanin: Your Skin’s Natural Defence

What is Melanin?

Melanin is a pigment responsible for the color of your hair, eyes, and skin. It is produced by cells called melanocytes, which are found in the constantly dividing layer of your skin, known as the stratum basale. The pigment is made through the oxidation of an amino acid called tyrosine and is present in various parts of your body including your skin, eyes, and hair. When your skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes produce more melanin to shield the living cells below from harmful UV rays. Melanin absorbs these rays and also protects your skin from premature aging, or ‘photoaging,’ by neutralising free radicals produced by UV light.

The Importance of Melanin in Aesthetic Procedures

  1. Skin Sensitivity: Treatments like dermaplaning, chemical peels, and RF Micro-needling remove the surface cells containing melanin, leaving your skin photosensitized and less protected against UV rays. Wearing SPF50 daily is highly recommended.
  2. Risk of Hyperpigmentation: Some people are more susceptible to localized melanin production, causing sunspots or solar keratoses. Again, SPF50 is crucial for aftercare.
  3. Chemical Peels: Certain peels are formulated to reduce pigmentation and even skin tones. They work by inhibiting the production of melanin by blocking the enzyme that converts tyrosine to melanin.

Sunscreen: Your Second Line of Defence

Both types of sunscreen are effective for skin protection.

Types of Sunscreen

  • Mineral Sunscreen: Contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and physically blocks sun rays.
  • Chemical Sunscreen: Contains ingredients like avobenzone and absorbs UV rays to prevent skin damage.

Understanding SPF Ratings

The SPF number refers to the time it can protect your skin from burning. For example, if you’d normally burn in 10 minutes, an SPF30 will protect you for 300 minutes. However, reapplication every 2 hours is recommended.

Broad-Spectrum Protection

Choose a sunscreen tested for broad-spectrum protection, guarding you against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). This will protect you from immediate sunburn as well as long-term effects like wrinkles and skin cancer.
